THE FIRST IDEA: ALL LIFE IS SACRED

Some believe the sacred is to be found
in ancient books,
in a special building,
or in some future existence.

But you can see the sacred in all around  you.
The distant line of trees is sacred.
The humble meal is sacred.

You can see the sacred
in the scattered millions of earth’s humans…
in the comforting friend at your side…

in a 200 billion star galaxy…
in the wondrous ideas of your own mind.

To be at the center of life,
know that all life is sacred.

THE SECOND IDEA: NOW IS ALL THERE IS

In this sacred world,
do not grope into the past for life’s anchor…
do not stretch to the future for meaning…

Know the present
as your personal treasure.

Just now…
feel the constancy of your breath,
the solid earth beneath your feet.

Sense the strength of your working hands.
Take joy in the human face before you.

In the present moment you are never lost.
Your center knows that now is all there is.

THE THIRD IDEA : EVERYTHING YOU DO IS SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

In each moment,
your every thought and action
is spiritual practice.

Awareness is the greatest practice,
so be aware of the blooming tree as you walk,
be open to the hurt borne by another … or yourself.

Be graciously,
curiously
open and aware.

Second, practice an easy love for the unique person you are,
for you experience life only through your own being.

And, because the human individual
is the most magnificent being you will ever encounter,
be gracious to all the people in your life.

The summary to centering your life:
Be open to this sacred world…
be gracious to yourself…
and to others…

And your practice will spill into life around you.
It will spread through space and time,
far beyond your ability to imagine.

Practice these in the present moment
—the only place you ever live—
And you are at life’s core.
